Looking for a Job? 5 Interview Tips from a Professional HR

First, I would like to introduce myself. I’m Vanessa, and I’m a psychologist with experience in Human Resources in different industries, though my focus today is in TI industries.

I honestly used to think people knew this, because for me it is not new, and I don’t see it as difficult, but, as long as I know more people struggling with job search, I realize that maybe it is not that obvious. So, I just expect that these recommendations allow you to learn something new, think something you never thought before, and show you there are more things to do and try. 💪

So let’s start with these recommendations, shall we?

Tip I – Knowing what you want

I know, it sounds obvious, but let me tell you, I used to ask people “What are you looking for?” and they used to have between 3 or 4 alternatives, “A, but maybe B, but if I find C it is OK too”. And I think that’s a problem. And let me explain myself, it is not a problem to have alternatives, it is a problem if you don’t have a clear target, and focus on what you want. Try to reduce to one or top two options, and that will give you focus.

Tip II – Self-knowledge

If you know what you want, you need to know if something is possible, because, we can’t work as a firefighter if we don’t know how to use the hose right? 😂

Well, the point of this second recommendation is to try to know more about you, you need to know all what you got, and help you to find the job you decide in the first point, and off course, what you don’t know, the experience you don’t have, or the requirements you don’t don’t fulfill.

Because doing this exercise you are going to know the market and where you stand within it. And then, try to train yourself to fit in with it.

Tip III – Prepare yourself

I spoiled you with the last part of the second recommendation, but once you know what you want, you know yourself, know what the market wants, and what you have or don’t have, you have all the context to prepare yourself for the battlefield. ⚔️

Prepare your CV or profile on job portals to show your experience based on the requirements of the market.

Write a speech trying to tell your professional journey, and read it out loud.
Try to find if you are focusing on your experience with the requirements of the job you want to get and practice your storytelling because is not only what you write in your CV, is also, what you can tell in an interview.

Tip IV – Practice

Practice makes perfect; or at least helps you get close. And if you do it with consistency, you’re going to get results. Try to do some interviews. There are a lot of free apps to practice interviews. You can apply for jobs every day and don’t forget to do follow-ups of your applications. If you repeat this every day, every week, you’re going to be more comfortable with the process.

Tip V – Socialization

I realize that most people don’t know the power of socialization in a professional environment. Networking is a POWER.
And no my friend, I’m not talking about going out with your friends. It’s not that kind of socialization. 😂
You can practice with your friends and family, of course… but I’m talking about having conversations with people who are where you want to be.
And how can you reach those people? Use LinkedIn, and other social media, send connect requests, say Hi, and try to have a nice conversation.
You can ask for advice and maybe they can help you with something. Another way to reach related people is by finding conferences, MeetUps, or events where you can meet people, talk about anything and know how their companies work. Be creative and go out to professional socialization!

Bonus Tip!

And last but not least, don’t be afraid of failure, failures force you to pay attention to where you need to improve. Finding a job is actually a job, you need to find your own framework and improve your strategies until you accomplish your goal.

That’s All, Folks

I really hope this was useful, and if you have something to ask me, you can write to me on LinkedIn, and I am going to be willing to give you a hand.
Vane.
